WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA OR MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?
Gynecomastia is a medical condition that 40 to 60 percent of all men have to some degree. It is sometimes referred to as “man boobs” due to their larger than normal aspect similar to a woman’s breasts. Male reduction surgery can make a world of difference on a man’s self-esteem and confidence.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?
You may benefit from male breast reduction surgery if you experience physical and emotional discomfort from having overly large breast tissue. Common forms of physical discomfort include painful chafing, rashes and irritation caused by excess folds of skin rubbing against each other. Emotionally, overly large breast tissue can be a source of embarrassment and low self-esteem.
There are different techniques used to treat gynecomastia and it will depend on your particular case. This is determined by the amount of tissue that needs to be removed, if excess fat is present and if the quality of the skin is viable. This means that skin or tissue could be removed, liposuction, modification of nipples or a combination of all can be used during the procedure. Male breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and can take up to 3 hours to perform. We will determine the best approach for your situation during pre-op evaluations.
During your gynecomastia surgery recovery period, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals after surgery. Drains will also be placed during the first 2-3 weeks. You can return back to an office job after 2 weeks.
Gynecomastia surgery results are immediately visible but the final results may take 3-6 months to achieve. Although Incision lines are permanent, they will continue to fade over time.
The cost for breast reconstruction can vary depending on the individual needs but it is typically $5,500 to $7,000.
