BOTOX & DYSPORT
The fine lines and wrinkles on the face can be disheartening, as it is usually a sign of the aging process taking hold. There is not much we can do to keep ourselves from getting older, but there are methods available that help keeps aging at bay. Botulinum Toxin, more commonly known as Botox, is proven effective at softening the facial muscles and promoting a more youthful appearance.
IS THERE MORE THAN 1 TYPE OF BOTOX?
There are many brands of Botulinum Toxin. Our office currently carries Botox (by Allergan) and Dysport (by Galderma). Both Botox and Dysport have the same active ingredient: Botulinum Toxin. They both work the same way, cost the same, and last the same. Dysport starts work a little faster than Botox: 2-3 days instead of 4-5 days to see the effect.
Many of our patients prefer Botox because it is the original. Many others prefer Dysport because they like to see the effects sooner. Both are excellent choices!
HOW IS BOTOX USED?
Botox and Dysport both cause temporary paralysis of muscles or block specific nerves. Wrinkles result from muscle contractions under the skin when people smile, laugh or frown. Botox prevents the muscles from contracting to allow the skin to remain smooth. Tiny needles inject the medication under the skin and into the muscle or nerve.
It is essential to remember that this toxin is used on mild to moderate wrinkles; it is not intended for use on profound wrinkles that need more invasive treatment, such as a facelift. Also, it is essential to consider that the amount of Botox or Dysport required varies with each patient. One syringe may work well for most patients, but patients with more extensive wrinkles may need more. The best results are obtained using these products consistently every 3-4 months.
