BOTULINUM TOXIN & DYSPORT
The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles can be discouraging, as it is often a sure sign that the aging process is taking hold. There is not much we can do to prevent aging, but there are methods available to help keep aging at bay. Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botulinum Toxin, has been shown to be effective in smoothing facial muscles and promoting a more youthful appearance.
IS THERE MORE THAN 1 TYPE OF BOTULINUM TOXIN?
Yes: there are many brands of botulinum toxin. Our clinic currently offers Botulinum Toxin (by Allergan) and Dysport (by Galderma). Both Botulinum Toxin and Dysport have the same active ingredient. They both work the same way, cost the same and last the same amount of time.
Dysport starts working a little faster than Botulinum Toxin: 2-3 days instead of 4-5 days to see the effect.
Many of our patients prefer Botulinum Toxin because it is the original. Others prefer Dysport because they like to see the effects faster – both are excellent choices!
HOW IS BOTULINUM TOXIN USED?
Botulinum Toxin and Dysport cause temporary paralysis of muscles and block certain nerves. Wrinkles are the result of contractions of the muscles under the skin when people smile, laugh or frown. Botulinum toxin prevents the muscles from contracting, allowing the skin to remain smooth. Tiny needles are used to inject the medication under the skin and into the muscle or nerve.
It is important to note that this toxin is used on mild to moderate wrinkles, it is not intended for use on very deep wrinkles that need more invasive treatment such as a facelift. In addition, the amount of Botulinum Toxin or Dysport required varies with each patient. For most patients, one syringe may work well, but patients with more extensive wrinkles may require more. Best results are obtained by using these products consistently every 3-4 months.
