Abnormally protruding ears can make a child, of any age, the object of cruel comments by peers. Otoplasty reshapes not only the ears, but also the self-image. Prominent, protruding ears do not look natural – on adults or children. Ears are ideally positioned close to the side of the head. Children with “Dumbo ears” begin to recognize the difference between their ears and those of their peers between the ages of three to four years old. Damaging, caustic remarks made by peers begin to leave psychological scars in a child as young as six years old. Adults who have lived with prominent ears may be sensitive about their appearance and display it through a poor self-image. Promin Auris (outstanding ears) is an inherited condition that affects about 5% of Caucasian children. Young or old, the unwanted attention that comes from unnatural looking ears can be damaging.
Dr. Leong performs Otoplasty (ear reshaping) surgery on children who are at least five years old and on adults of any age who are in good health and who have realistic expectations.
