What is Blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery?
Dr. Leong recommends this surgery to remove excess fat, skin and muscle from the lower and upper eyelids. This restores a more youthful, vital appearance to the eye area. Eyelid surgery is also performed to improve vision for patients with excess drooping skin of the upper-eyelids when this interferes with vision.
Who Is A Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
If you are concerned with any or all of the items listed above, and you are in otherwise good health and have realistic goals and expectations, you could be a perfect candidate for Dr. Leong’s eyelid surgery. This will be determined during your personal consultation with him. Many times Dr. Leong recommends a Face Lift or Laser Resurfacing in conjunction with your Eyelid Surgery and/or Eyebrow Lift to correct descending brows. After your complete assessment, Dr. Leong will show you your best options, then tailor a treatment plan that will achieve your goals effectively.
Is anesthesia required for Blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery?
Yes. Either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia can be used depending on patient preference and Dr. Leong’s assessment of your medical needs.
Where will Dr. Leong perform my Blepharoplasty (eyelid) Surgery?
Dr. Leong will perform your Blepharoplasty surgery in a state-of-the-art, out-patient surgery center, or at one of several outstanding Pittsburgh area hospitals where Dr. Leong has admitting privileges to perform facial plastic surgery.
Will I have scars from my Bleharoplasty (eyelid) surgery?
Yes. You will have scars, but they are well hidden since Dr. Leong makes the incisions within the normal creases and folds of the eyelids. These scars heal in such a fashion that they are virtually invisible in the vast majority of cases.
Can Blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery get rid of the dark circles under my eyes?
No. You may notice slight improvement but Dr. Leong recommends laser resurfacing, a non-surgical filler, and/or chemical peels to correct dark circles.
Will the results last forever?
Your results will be long-lasting. Naturally, you eyes will continue to age, but you will always benefit from the appearance enhancing impact of the blepharoplasty.
Will insurance pay for this surgery?
If your surgery is performed to correct cosmetic problems. Insurance does not cover it. If your surgery is used to correct impaired vision caused by excess, droopy skin of the upper eyelids, your insurance will likely cover it. Our patient care coordinator will work out all the details for you.
How long will I be out of work after my Blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery? Bruising, swelling and mild discomfort are normal for a few days. If you just have this procedure done, you should be presentable and able to return to work in about 7 days. Any discoloration from bruising can be easily concealed with cosmetic, mineral make-up which actually aids in the healing process. You will need to avoid rigorous, strenuous activities for 1-2 weeks or until Dr. Leong tells you otherwise.
When will Dr. Leong remove my stitches?
Generally, Dr. Leong uses absorbable sutures and no suture removal is needed. If he does use permanent sutures, they will be removed in 4-5 days.
