Questions about Tear Trough Deformity Correction

What is Tear Trough Deformity Correction?

Tear Trough Deformity Correction involves filling the hollowness between the lower eyelid and the side of the nose with a filler injection like Restylane® and Juvederm®.

Are all men and women good candidates for Tear Trough Deformity Correction?
Men and women who have experienced some dropping of the middle area of the cheek and have developed the tear trough deformity are candidates.

Where does Dr. Leong perform Tear Trough Deformity Correction?
Dr. Leong performs Tear Trough Deformity Correction in his state-of-the-art office as an out-patient procedure.

Does Tear Trough Deformity Correction require anesthesia?
This depends on the patient. Some patients don’t require anesthesia and describe the injection as a “pinch” sensation. Other patients prefer the use of numbing cream or a small injection of local anesthetic.

How long does a Tear Trough Deformity Correction procedure take?
Five to ten minutes.

How long does the correction of tear trough deformity last?
This depends somewhat on the particular patient. In general, fillers last longer in areas of the face that move less. For example, injections into the lips tend to last a somewhat shorter amount of time because the lips move so much with eating and talking. On the other hand, the tear trough area moves very little and therefore the filler tends to last longer. There is variation between patients so you should count on the filler lasting between 8 months and two years.

Are there alternatives to filler injections to correct the tear trough deformity?
Yes. The tear trough deformity can also be improved the Fat Injections to the face. This approach does require the patient to go to the operating room, but can be an excellent alternative for some patients. Other surgical options include a Cheeklift which can improve a tear trough deformity and a Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift). All of these options and alternative will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr. Leong.

Is Tear Trough Deformity Correction painful?
Patients describe a “pinching” sensation. Dr. Leong takes every measure to maximize the patient’s comfort.

What kind of recovery is involved?
Injectable treatments to the lips are easily tolerated and result in occasional minor bruising and swelling.

Will I need to take time off work?
No.
