Sculptra® is a synthetic injectable material called poly-L-lactic acid. This material has been used for years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants and other types of implants. It is injected below the skin in the area of the fat loss and over time there is a gradual increase in skin thickness. Results are not immediate but occur gradually over a few weeks time. Most patients require from 3-6 treatments with varying amounts of injected solution and touch-up treatments are usually needed to maintain the desired effect. Treatment results last an average of 2 years.
Possible side effects may include tenderness or pain, redness, swelling or bleeding in the treated area. These side effects usually last from 3-17 days. Small bumps, under the skin in the treated area, may also occur but historically these have gone away on their own within 6-12 months. The benefits of Sculptra® far out weigh the minimal side effects patients report, and patient satisfaction has been and continues to be outstanding.
