Questions about Hair Transplant Procedures:

Am I a good candidate for Hair Transplant surgery?

You could be if you are concerned about permanent hair loss, you are in good health and you have realistic expectations. The amount of hair that can be transplanted is determined by how much donor hair you have. Dr. Leong will be determine this during your consult with him.

Where does Dr. Leong perform Hair Transplant surgery?
Dr. Leong will perform your hair transplant surgery in a state-of-the-art, out-patient surgery center, or at one of several outstanding Pittsburgh area hospitals where Dr. Leong has admitting privileges to perform facial plastic surgery.

Is transplanted hair permanent?
Yes, the transplanted hair will keep its native characteristics and remain permanently.

Is the surgery painful?
You will not feel any pain during your surgery. Dr. Leong’s technique uses local anesthetic combined with oral or IV sedation as needed. Dr. Leong’s patients do not experience any significant discomfort. I don’t want my hair to look like corn rows! It won’t. The old style "corn row plug" look is the thing of the past. Dr. Leong’s techniques recreate naturally looking hair. Remember, a good hair transplant should be undetectable.

How long will the surgery take?
Your surgery will take from 1-4 hours – depending upon the technique Dr. Leong decides to use and the size of the area being transplanted. You may require more than one surgery to achieve the optimum results desired.

Are there any visible scars?
There are no visible scars involved with the transplanted hair. The donor site will have a tiny line hidden in your hair. This tiny line will only noticeable if you shave your hair completely.

Will other people notice I had a surgery?
Immediately after the surgery you will have tiny scabbing in the areas hair was transplanted to for 5 to 6 days. These scabs can be concealed with your own hair or hidden by wearing a hat.

Will I need to have a bandage?
Dr. Leong’s technique does not require any surgical dressing. When you leave the center your hair can be styled the same way as when you arrived.

How long will it take for my new hair to grow?
Your new hair will start to grow permanently in about three months.

Will I need to take time off work?
Most of Dr. Leong’s patients are able to return to work and normal activities within 1-2 days. You must avoid strenuous activities for 10 days.

How will I feel right after surgery?
Most patients tell us their scalp feels achy and/or tight at first. This goes away over a few days.

Are there any risks involved in hair transplant surgery?
Yes, all surgeries entail some degree of risk. Risks include excessive scarring, failure to “take”, infection, and transplanted hair with an unnatural look. All these risks are very minimal. Reducing these risks is why it is so important to choose a surgeon who is qualified to perform your hair transplant surgery.

How do I know which technique is best for me?
Dr. Leong is a specially trained surgeon and knows how to customize your surgery to meet your specific needs. Based upon the information you discuss with Dr. Leong during your personal consultation – he will determine which approach is right for you.
