Hair loss is a common problem. For some, it is merely the way nature intended it to be. For others, it is a serious issue that can cause emotional distress including reduced self-confidence and a change in lifestyle. A hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure designed to restore your hair by filling in the balding or thinning areas of the scalp – using your own hair. As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Leong restricts his cosmetic surgery practice to surgeries of the face and neck. By highly specializing his practice, Dr. Leong has the training, experience, and artistry to provide you with the best results.
There has been a tremendous evolution in techniques used to treat baldness over the last twenty years. The unsightly “corn row” plugs used in the past are giving way to the use of follicular unit grafting. Hairs grow naturally in clusters that contain 1, 2, 3 or 4 hairs. The standard of care now utilizes these clusters or follicular unit grafts (FUGs) to restore a natural appearing scalp and hairline. Dr. Leong has recognized that while using FUGs provides a natural appearing scalp, this technique can fall short in terms of providing the patient with the best hair density possible, a critical element of an optimal aesthetic outcome. In order to provide the patient with the best result possible, Dr. Leong combines multiple unit grafts (MUGs) with traditional FUGs. This approach allows for BOTH a natural appearing result and excellent hair density.
Many women experience permanent hair loss starting in their late 40’s as it manifests itself usually in three ways: thinning hair on the top of the head, patches of hair loss, or hair loss that runs from the front of the scalp to the middle of the scalp. Men’s hair loss usually progresses from thinning hair, or a receding hairline, to total baldness when the shrinking follicles stop producing hair. Female androgenetic alopecia is caused by a genetic and hormonal component. Male hair loss is also caused by genetic coding. Once this genetic process begins, it continues throughout our lifetime.
Dr. Leong recommends hair transplantation surgery, for both men and women, to effectively and permanently restore lost hair. Using advanced techniques known as multiple unit grafts and follicular unit grafts, Dr. Leong is able to achieve natural looking results for his patients.
